[COVID-19] Social distancing measures at orienteering and running events: ORIEN.ASIA, Landrunning, Norrsken Orienteering and more

Safe sports, safe events: social distancing measures for orienteering and running events

We know you’re worried about the coronavirus pandemic, no less so about government restrictions or lockdowns which makes it more difficult for orienteering and running events to take place. Hygiene is our utmost priority and the organisers/events included below are committed to a common social distancing policy. These are ORIEN.ASIA, Norrsken Orienteering, Thailand International Orienteering Championship, #AsiaCityRace, Tropical Orienteering Week, and Landrunning.

Safe sports, safe events: social distancing measures for orienteering and running events

The policy divides the COVID-19 situation into 4 general levels, where there will be different arrangements for physical and virtual races.

Summary

Level 1: Stable

When there are few or no new COVID-19 cases, and there are no restrictions on large events or public activities, all events will proceed as usual. 2m social distance will be in place, and there will be hand hygiene available such as sanitizers.

A general benchmark would be where there are less than 20 cases per 100 000 residents for the last 14 days.

Level 1: Stable Level 1: Stable

Level 2: Mild

When there are some new COVID-19 cases, or when there are restrictions on the number of people at public events, physical events will be divided into smaller events with limited quota, such as 50 people or as allowed by the law. Prize presentations will not be held.

For international runners unable to join due to travel restrictions, virtual race will be available. It’s free to switch between physical and virtual races.

A general benchmark would be when there are more than 20 new cases per 100 000 residents in the past 14 days.

Level 2: Mild Level 2: Mild

Level 3: Severe

When there are many new COVID-19 cases, or when public events are not allowed but individual outdoor activity is allowed, the physical events will be run as an individual challenge. This means that runners may complete the course on terrain during the prescribed period.

Virtual race will be available for all runners to complete at home, and it’s free to switch between physical and virtual races.

A general benchmark would be when there are more than 100 cases per 100 000 residents in the past 14 days.

Level 3: Severe Level 3: Severe

Level 4: Lockdown

When there’s a government-mandated lockdown there would naturally not be any orienteering or running events. All events will be run as virtual events.

Level 4: Lockdown Level 4: Lockdown

Notes

  • Where required by law or where culturally appropriate, we will require the wearing of masks at the arena.
  • Virtual races are completed by online street view orienteering or running. Timing solution provided by Metrunner.
  • 2m distance and hand disinfectant will always be in place. Do not participate on-site if you have symptoms—stay at home and change to a virtual race for free.
